Road construction is one of the most common applications for machine control. There are many reasons for this, including the complexity and size of the projects and the sheer number of machines deployed that can benefit from machine control technology.

Many road construction projects are already completed using 3D machine control solutions, where a Digital Terrain Map (DTM) produced for the project is uploaded into the machines to permit the project to be completed to the desired plan. The need for staking out is much reduced (almost to zero) and as-built surveying can also be reduced significantly.

Machine control can also enhance excavator safety for excavators due to the variety of task deployment around the site, such as producing accurate batters, excavations for utility installation and general earthworks.
